* Special user: weight < 45.5 kg, smoking history < 10 cigarettes/day, cardiovascular disease p’ts.
Nicotine chewing gum (Nicorette):
In the first 6 wks, p’ts should chew 1 piece q1-2h. During wk 7-9, p’ts should chew 1 piece q2-4h. Finally, p’ts should chew 1 piece of gum q4-8h for wk 10-12; max. 24 gum pieces/day.
Contraindication: continued use of tobacco or any other nicotine-containing products; recent myocardial infarction, uncontrolled hypertension, heart rhythm irregularities, severe angina pectoris, or gastric ulcer, active temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disease.
Adverse effect:
Common: skin irritation (patch), nicotine withdrawal, dizziness, headache, insomnia.
Serious: cardiac dysrhythmia, hypertension, tachyarrhythmia, immune hypersensitivity reaction.
