Immunologic Agents : Active Immunity (Vaccines and Toxoids)

Usual dose:SC
Varicella, Prophylaxis(Adolescents (≥13 years of age) and Adults): 0.5 mL for 2 doses; allow at least 4 weeks to elapse between doses.
Routine dose (12 months to 12 years of age): 0.5 mL subQ.
Herpes zoster, Prophylaxis: (50 years or older) 0.65 mL (entire contents of vial)
Dose adjustment:
Herpes zoster: US Food and Drug Administration recommends vaccination starting at age 50 years; Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends vaccination starting at 60 years or older, regardless of prior episodes of herpes zoster.
Contraindication: pregnancy, avoid pregnancy for 3 months following vaccination; active febrile infection or respiratory illness; immunosuppression or immunodeficiency; hiv-associated infections and aids; concomitant chemotherapy or radiation therapy; severe allergic reaction.
Precaution:
Concomitant use: blood or plasma transfusions or immunoglobulin administration; defer vaccination for at least 5 months and immunoglobulin administration for 2 months after vaccination; salicylates or salicylate-containing products; avoid use in children and adolescents age 1 to 17 years for 6 weeks after vaccination.
Adverse effect:
Common: fever, injection-site complaints (pain/soreness, swelling and/or erythema, rash, pruritus, hematoma, induration, stiffness), varicella-like rash (injection site or generalized).
Serious: Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, congestive heart failure.
